Submission to Gatwick Consultation May 2014

The PRC has made a detailed objection to the Gatwick Airport Limited scheme for a second runway at Gatwick, a cynical part of their campaign to persuade the Government to put the short term gain of their own foreign shareholders ahead of the long term interests of the people living near to Gatwick and the local, regional and national economy.

The level of cynicism presented by the GAL Board is reflected in

  • the lack of detail about how almost trebling of capacity would be accommodated on the ground - no plans for new roads, rail lines, houses, schools, infrastructure
  • the false claim that Gatwick would be the cheapest way for the taxpayer to build an additional runway in the South East
  • the false claim that Gatwick could be delivered quicker than alternatives at Heathrow or Stansted
  • the false claim that Gatwick would have a smaller impact on valuable environmental assets - especially the internationally significant Ashdown Forest
  • the false claim that there is wide-ranging local support for what is a thinly veiled attempt to gain a very large taxpayer subsidy for the foreign GAL shareholders
  • their false claim that Gawtick can meet the needs of passengers from north of the Thames - it can't because it's in the wrong place!

Stansted is predicted by the Government to have spare capacity until 2040, there is no immediate need to build a second runway except to satisfy the shareholders in Heathrow and Gatwick.
